Why Satva

What goes into every Satva plate

One fallen Areca leaf, pressed into shape, checked by hand and tested by an independent lab. Here's the detail.

Lab results

What the lab found

Our plates and bowls are made in an ISO 9001 certified factory in Chennai, India, and tested by SGS India, an independent testing lab.

No harmful chemicals found

No arsenic, no PCP (a wood preservative) and none of the 70 pesticides tested for.

No harmful bacteria found

No E. coli, Salmonella or coliforms, and almost no yeast or mould.

Microwave

No change after five one-minute rounds with oily food.

Strong enough for real service

Sturdy

A pressed Areca leaf stays firm under a full main, so plates don't bend or fold when guests carry them.

Doesn't soak through

Laksa, curry and gravy stay on the plate. We test every size with hot gravy before it goes on sale.

Microwave

SGS found no visible change after five one-minute rounds with oily food.

Fridge and freezer

Chill or freeze food in the plates and bowls, then serve straight from them.

Hot gravy

Tested with hot gravy

Before a size goes on sale, we fill it with hot laksa, curry and gravy. Every plate and bowl in the range holds them without leaking.

How it's made

From fallen leaf to plate

  1. Collected

Areca trees drop their leaves several times a year. Farmers pick up the fallen ones, so no tree is cut.

  2. Washed

Each leaf is cleaned in water, which also softens it.

  3. Dried

Leaves are dried before and after pressing. Dry leaves don't grow mould.

  4. Pressed

Heated moulds press each leaf into shape.

  5. Checked

Edges are trimmed, and every piece is checked for cracks and spots.

  6. Packed

Pieces are stacked and sealed against damp and dust.

A tan Satva square plate with dark flecks in the grain

Same size, different pattern

The mould sets the size, so every piece of a size matches. The leaf sets the colour and grain, so every piece looks a little different.

Why hosts choose Areca

Guests notice the plate. Areca brings a real leaf grain to the table, stays firm in the hand and holds hot laksa and curry, so it looks and works like proper tableware at weddings, banquets and plated menus.

Why it matters in Singapore

Singapore throws away about 200,000 tonnes of disposables a year (NEA), and Semakau Landfill is expected to be full by 2035. More hosts now ask what their plates are made of.

Storage & mould

Keeping plates dry in Singapore

Mould comes from damp. Our plates are dried at the factory and sealed before they ship, and the lab found almost no yeast or mould. The rest is storage:

  • Keep cartons in a cool, dry room, off the floor, away from sinks and aircon drip.
  • Keep pieces wrapped until you use them. Reseal open packs.
  • Use older stock first. Put aside any piece with spots or a musty smell.

After use

Areca leaf is a plant. Like any fallen leaf, it breaks down in compost.
